An October 2011 viewing at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London of the new exhibition "Painting Canada: Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven." The exhibit is coming to Kleinberg, Ont., in the fall.

“Painting Canada,” a dazzling show about the Group of Seven that wowed London a few months ago, will come to Canada this fall.

Plans are underway to have the works of Tom Thomson and other members of the Group of Seven on exhibit at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection from November to January.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for Canadians,” said Victoria Dickenson, CEO and director of the Kleinburg, Ont. gallery. What I hope has piqued Canadians curiosity is “what was it that the Europeans are so excited about?”

The show drew record crowds to the Dulwich Picture Gallery in south London, where it ended a 12-week run in January. Since then it has moved on to Oslo, Norway, where it is on view until mid-May. Then it goes to Groningen, in the Netherlands.

The McMichael gallery north of Toronto is working with lenders of the 123 paintings and sketches — including Thomson’s The Jack Pine — to bring the show to Canada in the fall.

The National Gallery of Canada — which was one of the major lenders, along with the Art Gallery of Ontario and the McMichael — was co-organizer of the show.

“I think there is a new generation who isn’t as familiar with the Group of Seven’s works,” Dickenson said. “I hope that we’ll have as many people who will see the paintings (as in London) with fresh eyes or some who haven’t known the Group of Seven before.”
